Kudzu-yu (hot arrowroot drink)

The kudzu vine grows everywhere like a weed. When I was a child, my grandmother would make starchy kudzu-yu drink for me if I caught a cold. Since ancient times the roots have been used as raw material for herbal medicines and food, the vines for woven textiles, and the leaves for writing paper. In the 8th century Manyoshu manuscripts, it is written about as a plant from which textile fibres can be created.
